Mindset. A collection of beliefs and attitudes. A person’s way of thinking and their opinions. An outlook towards life.
Our mindsets are determining how we live, how we treat others, our belief in systems, religion, work, and in general, life. These are usually downloaded by us, as we learn, from our parents, friends, our school, society, and our circumstances. Mindsets are rooted so deeply in our subconscious that they take a real and consistent effort to change. Why would we want to change them at all? Well, what if we were “programmed” incorrectly by our upbringing? There is a very good chance that many of us will need to change/modify our beliefs at some point, for them to have a definite and ordered purpose in our life. Or what if we have a mindset that doesn’t work well anymore in this world, the one that is changing so fast from technology that we can’t even begin to imagine the next 20 years of advances. Remember us 20 years ago? We weren’t staring at our phones all day and had to use things like maps and encyclopedias. Jobs have changed in just 20 years. Life has changed significantly in just 20 years.
What if our mindset is holding us back from living a better life? Just because we believe something, might not mean it is exactly how life has to be. Maybe that belief came from our childhood, but think about how much the world has changed since you were a child. Adapting is the way, always. Improving on what we are doing for a better future. New mindsets lead to new growth. A visionary challenges how things currently are. And they are only praised by the masses after they are wildly successful, rather than gaining support when they are initially challenging the system.
Do you believe life should be hard? That money is hard to make? That you are part of the one true religion? That you can’t have time freedom until you are 65? That you have to get married, buy a house, have a baby, and live in debt the majority of your life? Have you challenged those beliefs yourself? That’s the most important part. That we challenge ourselves. Otherwise are we just “parroting” information, therefore stunting our growth, both personally and as a whole. If we think our life has to be that way, then that will definitely be the life we live. Some of these beliefs may still stick with you (many of mine did), and that’s normal, just be sure that they were challenged by you. Be sure that you aren’t living a life “just because everyone else is doing it that way.” In that sense, we rob ourselves of what could have been, just from not exploring other possibilities.
If you dig in, and find that you want to adopt new mindsets, be prepared for your life to change in amazing ways. I never knew that I could live this well, until I made the conscious, scary, against the grain choice to live this well. I traded in 12 hour nursing shifts and stress for creativity, flexibility, an office from any coffee shop I would like to be at, and in a few years: time freedom for my husband and I. I stopped working for next week’s paycheck and started working for money that will keep coming in, month after month. That’s a mindset shift that will change the course of our lives. I did not know this was possible until I was 27 years old and was told about it by a friend. I had to challenge all of my beliefs/ mindsets about how I thought life and money making should be, and listen to new information. It is called unlearning and relearning. Or reprogramming if you will. It takes effort, and you will have to tune out the old information. You will have to decide what you are listening to, what news (if any), what podcasts, or books you are reading. You might find that you don’t have time for TV and don’t even want to waste your life watching it for hours a day anyways. It is a journey. It can not happen overnight but it is possible. I am living proof.
Mindset over matter. Your thoughts absolutely create your life. This isn’t magic or voodoo, just the simple fact that your action steps will follow your belief system, whatever that is. Change your thoughts, and that will change your life. When I thought I had to be a nurse for my whole life, I continued looking for nursing jobs. Even though it made me unhappy and kept me in the same financial cycles of working to pay bills. When I thought I could be a business builder of residual income, I started reading everything I could from new teachers. I stopped working as a nurse, started working differently, thinking of my time differently, and having a belief in a different future than we were originally on track for. Thoughts and beliefs are very powerful in shaping our reality like this. Adopt the belief system that really truly makes sense, not the one you were told to believe in. Be exactly who you want to be, and no one else. You were created with special gifts, for a purpose. Your mindset could be the only thing holding you back from that.
